Dear Esteemed Members,
ABS is back. This week, it’s all about the heart.
Heart disease remains the leading cause of death worldwide and the leading cause of death for women in the United States, accounting for approximately 1 in 5 female deaths each year. Nearly 45% of women ages 20 and older are live with cardiovascular disease. These numbers highlight the importance of prevention, early detection, and education in public health.
We’re also recognizing Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) Awareness Week, which brings attention to heart conditions present at birth that affect millions worldwide. Thanks to advances in pediatric cardiology, 90% of children born with CHD now survive into adulthood. In addition, we celebrate Cardiovascular Professionals Week and acknowledge the physicians, researchers, and public health professionals, including those at the Bloomberg School of Public Health, whose work saves lives every day.
In honor of National Wear Red Day, we’re showing support in a visible way.
Wear red this Friday, February 13th, and join us at Sommer Hall from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. to meet the E-Board, connect with fellow members and grab some treats.
We hope to see you there as we raise awareness and celebrate progress in heart health.
Earlier this week, we also recognized International Day of Women and Girls in Science, a global observance celebrating the contributions of women in STEM and highlighting the importance of equity and access in scientific fields. As a public health community, we remain committed to uplifting women and girls in science whose research, innovation, and leadership move our field forward.
