 Communication
Hi [FIRST_NAME],

My name is Mashiyat Ahmed. I am a senior at Hopkins and the President of the Humanitarian Organization for Medicine & Equity. I would like to send you a warm welcome to our team! The e-board is beyond excited to get to know you and work with you this year.

The purpose of this email is to give you a bit of background on HOME, membership expectations, and first GBM information.

Mission:

As you may have heard during SIF, the idea behind HOME was inspired by the challenges many pre-medical students experience at Hopkins and beyond. The rigor of the pre-medical program often leaves little room for students to slow down and first develop appropriate awareness to engage with opportunities. When working with vulnerable populations, the lack of understanding of the impact we have on the population can be extremely detrimental. HOME aims to chip away the culture of "doing it for the resume" culture and help students be more intentional about their involvements by identifying their "why."

The work of HOME is especially critical at Hopkins because we are one of the only healthcare focused organizations tackling internal development. Our work starts here at our home before it ventures out to other corners of Baltimore.

GBM and Membership:

HOME will hold biweekly General Body meetings (GBM) on Thursdays from 5:30pm-6:30pm.  We will host both Zoom and In-person GBMs. You will be informed at least a week in advance of the meeting location.

One GBM will focus on education, where our Research Chairs will present a relevant topic exploring current events and challenges in the field of healthcare or medical humanitarianism. We will engage in an active discussion that will grow our awareness and problem-solving skills.

The other GBM will focus on developing our educational conversations into actual work, which may be service related. This is an opportunity for you to form smaller interest-based groups and pursue a long-term project.

A third involvement opportunity will be given every month, which may include participating in a service event, continuing project work, or hosting an event.

To be considered as an active member, one must attend 75% of all GBM meetings and is expected to partake in all non-GBM events, such as service events and outreach projects, per semester.

First GBM:

Our first GBM will take place on Sept 22nd, 6:30pm - 7:30pm. Location is TBD so keep an eye out for a follow-up email! In the meantime, please don't hesitate to reach out to us via email (johnshopkinshome@gmail.com) or IG (@homejhu) if you have any questions about the information shared here.

If you are no longer interested in HOME and would like unsuscribe from future communication, you can do so by leaving the group on CampusGroup. Please let us know if you have any trouble and we can take you off the listserv manually!

Otherwise, we look forward to meeting you soon!

Best,
Mashiyat
