Mergers have repeatedly reshaped the global banking landscape, yet many deals fail to deliver the value they promise. Drawing on more than four decades of leading and advising financial institutions across the United States, Japan and Europe, Professor Kocjan will examine what separates successful deals from failed ones, from deal strategy and integration planning to organizational effectiveness and operational transformation. The presentation will be followed by an audience Q&A.
John Kocjan has built one of the most distinguished careers in financial services consulting. He began his career in Citibank's international group in Asia before becoming a partner in McKinsey & Company's Financial Institutions Practice, working in New York and Tokyo. He went on to serve as President and CEO of St. Louis Bank, where he led its restructuring and sale, and later as a partner at Mitchell Madison Group. In 1998, he joined Deloitte, where he led the firm's U.S. and Global Financial Services Consulting practice and was involved in numerous merger integrations for some of the world's largest financial institutions. Since retiring as a Principal, he continues to coach Deloitte teams on large transformation projects at top financial institutions. A SAIS alumnus, he has taught Business Strategies for Global Financial Institutions at SAIS since 2016. He holds an MBA from the Wharton School, an MA from SAIS and a BA from Fordham University.
