On October 7, the International Law Society and Europe and Eurasia Club will screen The Storm (2009), directed by Hans-Christian Schmid. Set against the aftermath of the war in the former Yugoslavia, the film follows Hannah Maynard, a prosecutor at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), as she investigates a case against a Serbian commander accused of killing Bosnians. When the credibility of her key witness is called into question, the investigation takes her back to Bosnia.
The film provides an entry point not only into international criminal law, but also into the history and politics of the Balkans, the legacy of the ICTY, and the broader role of international tribunals in international relations.
In June 2025, Ukraine and the Council of Europe signed an agreement establishing a Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine. The comparison raises important questions about how international tribunals are created, how they interact with states and international institutions, and what role they can play in shaping post-conflict international order.
The event will begin with a brief panel discussion with Jeniffer Moore (adjunct lecturer at SAIS, Former United States Acting Ambassador to Belarus). More spearks to be announced.
