The Student Government Association (SGA) held its eighth general body meeting (GBM) of the 111th session on October 3, 2023.
Following the recent resignation of former Director of Research Vanessa Han, SGA officially confirmed Jason Shumsky, the former Vice Chair of the Policy Research and Development Commision (PRDC), as the new Director of Research and Chair of the PRDC.
Sophomore Senator Tim Huang was nominated and voted in for a position on the Shared Governance Council of KSAS, which will provide a group of students the opportunity to have a direct impact on curricular goals in KSAS.
Cabinet Reports
Student Body President Ryan Chou announced that the nomination for a new Justice to fill the current vacancy should be ready by next week. Treasurer Jenny Chen reported that SGA has used around $5328, with $18,762 remaining. The Director of Research Jason Shumsky stated that there is an upcoming affirmative action polling and potential policy advice for the admissions office.
First and Second Readings
The Freshman Programming Council proposed a Haunted House Event Funding Bill, which will run from 7-11PM on Saturday, October 28 (pickups provided). They hope to have fire dancers, strong man performances, and food trucks as well.
Following the second reading of the Student Perspective Interview Initiative Bill, presented by Senator Christian Bakhit, it unanimously passed the Senate for a budget of $192 for 12 Blue Jay Plushies.
The Phi Delta Theta Crab-Fest Bill also passed the Senate, with a promising projection of around 200 people in attendance sales. They asked for an additional $875 for 5 bushels of crabs, on top of the pilot funds issued mid-September.
Committee/Caucus Updates
- The Committee on Health, Safety, and Sustainability invited SHIP to discuss minimizing waste during move out. They also brainstormed ideas for a collaboration with Homewood Recycling to help with Blue Jays Go Green and promoting Zero Waste events to student organizations. HSS finalized logistics for the Sustainability Plan tabling event as well as collaborators attending HSS/GBM in coming weeks.
- The FLI Caucus worked with the FLI director Bryan Campers on establishing FLI Study nights and launching a 5K run in the spring for a charity cause.
