DEBATE TOPIC: THE ROLE OF TRADITIONAL BIRTH ATTENDANTS IN REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH IN AFRICA
The WHO 2021 maternal mortality report estimates that around 830 women per 100,000 live births die from preventable causes connected to pregnancy and delivery, with developing countries in Sub-Saharan Africa accounting for 99% of these deaths. Also, Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs) handle 60–80% of all deliveries in the rural settings of developing countries.
Should TBAs be excluded or integrated into reproductive health services in light of these rising statistics?
