About Hopkins Biotech Network
The Hopkins Biotech Network (HBN) is a non-profit student group whose mission is to expose, educate and connect Johns Hopkins students, alumni, postdoctoral fellows, and greater community with opportunities in non-academic careers. We strive to build and foster a supportive community for networking between students and professionals in non-academic fields including biotech, venture capital, entrepreneurship, and industry.
Open Leadership Positions
Vice-President – HBN’s Vice President is a strategic management role that monitors the impact of HBN initiatives, and collects and develops ideas for future efforts and initiatives. The VP plays an active role, in collaboration with the President(s), in developing recommendations for HBN’s roles and organizational structure, and in cultivating a pipeline of strong future HBN leaders. During the 2024-2025 school year, this role is expected to spearhead the development and launch of an alumni advisory board. This role is anticipated to require 10 hours per month.
Secretary – HBN’s Secretary develops and maintains complete records for the Network, and ensures the timely and complete fulfillment of reporting requirements to GSA and similar stakeholders. The Secretary plays an important strategic and tactical role in grant application processes, in collaboration with other leaders, which is a key marketable skill for future professional endeavors (e.g. grantsmanship). The Secretary manages the annual election process. As a member of the Executive Board, the Secretary may represent HBN as needed at GSA meetings and meetings with administration. This role is anticipated to require 5-10 hours per month.
Communications Director - HBN’s Communications Director manages HBN’s digital, social and print communications, including HopkinsGroups, social media, print flyers, and various podcast platforms associated with the Hopkins Biotech Podcast. This role is anticipated to require 5-10 hours per month.
Industry Relations Co-Director - HBN’s Industry Relations Co-Directors develop programming to deepen graduate student understanding of biotech industry trends, careers and skills, and broaden their professional horizons. Co-Directors work jointly, independently, and with partner organizations such as Nucleate and the Graduate Healthcare Business Association to develop events and other programming that offer graduate students the opportunity to network with and learn from industry professionals. This role is anticipated to require 5-10 hours per month.
Podcast Editorial Team - The Hopkins Biotech Podcast is a well-subscribed podcast that illuminates life science career opportunities by exploring careers in pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, consulting, VC and other private sector industries. There have been nearly 200 episodes, featuring executives and scientists from leading companies like Moderna, Illumina, Gingko Bioworks, RA Capital, bluebird bio, CRISPR Therapeutics, along with promising Hopkins spinouts. The podcast is entirely student run. The initial team graduated recently, and there is excitement and institutional support to continue this podcast with a new generation of talent. Team participation is anticipated to require 5-10 hours per month. There are opportunities in the following areas, and individuals can contribute in more than one capacity:
- Host (Audio talent): Get on the air! Interview and engage leaders in the biotech industry. A perfect role for a sociable and curious person interested in biotech. Mentoring from prior host available!
- Producer (Editorial planning): What are the themes we’ll tackle during the ’24-’25 school year? Who are some of the industry leaders we should invite to the show? Develop a plan for sets of episodes to engage our listeners and create the episodes that excite you! Mentoring from prior producers available!
- Editor (Editing talent): This is a critical role in making it happen! Help produce a polished product, and lead publishing the content through various podcast platforms. Training available!
Alumni Relations Officer – Assist in the administration of one of HBN’s keystone programs: the Mentor Match program, focused on establishing one-on-one mentoring relationships between graduate students with industry professionals. The Alumni Relations Co-Director also proactively identifies and engages alumni that fit with other HBN programming opportunities, including the Hopkins Biotech Podcast, the new alumni advisory board, industry relations events, and events co-organized by HBN partners like Nucleate and the Graduate Healthcare Business Association. This role is anticipated to require 5-10 hours per month.
