JHU Choral Society

About Us

Woodrow Wilson and his peers founded the JHU Choral Society in 1883. It is one of the oldest groups still active on campus. We are a non-auditioned full chorus (SATB) whose focus is large-scale choral works, usually from the Classical or Baroque periods.

Our repertoire varies in difficulty, but we welcome singers of all ranges and experience levels. Since there are no auditions, there is also no pressure. We rehearse once a week, so the commitment level is low, but rewarding. Every season is a new opportunity to improve yourself as a singer and sight-reader, under the tutelage of our wonderful director, Dr. Mark Hardy. We collaborated with the Baltimore Masterworks in 2008 and often perform with the Hopkins Symphony Orchestra (HSO) in the interest of cooperation with other musicians in Baltimore.

ECCO, JHU’s auditioned chamber choir, is a subset of the Choral Society open only to JHU students. We perform more difficult and varied repertoire, and participate in more performances per year. In recent years, ECCO has sung with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and performed for the JHU Board of Directors, at Family Weekend, and at Alumni Weekend.
