The Johns Hopkins University Chapter of the Thomistic Institute welcomes Prof. Daniel D. De Haan of Blackfriars and Campion Hall, University of Oxford, for a lecture exploring how Catholic and Thomistic ethics can inform the vocation and practice of healthcare.

Drawing on the thought of St. Thomas Aquinas, De Haan will consider the goods of medicine and their place within a flourishing human life; the practice of medicine as a school for the cultivation of virtue; and how natural law can inform ethical policy and prudential decision-making for the common good. The lecture will also consider how the theological virtues of hope and charity, together with misericordia—compassion or a merciful heart—can elevate through grace the vocations of physicians and nurses.

De Haan is the Frederick Copleston Senior Research Fellow and Lecturer in Philosophy and Theology in the Catholic Tradition at Blackfriars and Campion Hall at the University of Oxford. His research spans philosophical anthropology, hylomorphism and the sciences, moral psychology, philosophical theology, and the thought of Thomas Aquinas.

Free and open to the public. Lunch will be provided.
Food Provided (Pizza, cookies, soft drinks)
