As the 2026 review of the USMCA approaches, much of the current debate has centered around points of friction that could hinder the trade agreement’s successful renewal. However, less attention has been given to the unique opportunity that this renewal mechanism presents: A chance to collaboratively enhance and update the agreement for the benefit of all three member nations.

To shift the conversation toward a more constructive, forward-looking approach, the SAIS Canada Club, Latin America Club, and Mexico Student Association—supported by the Hopkins Center for Canadian Studies and the SAIS Americas Focus Area— are convening this conference to explore strategies for optimizing the USMCA. While the renewal process brings with it certain political and business uncertainties, it also offers a unique opportunity to strengthen North American economic integration, competitiveness, and prosperity.

This forum will bring together leading academics, policymakers, and industry professionals to discuss how to evolve the USMCA in a way that meets the challenges of today’s global economy. By fostering dialogue on a range of issues, we aim to offer valuable insights and actionable recommendations to relevant stakeholders as they prepare for the trade agreement's joint review in 2026.
