The Center for Diversity & Inclusion will be hosting the institution-wide Black Heritage Celebration on February 28, 2023 at 5:00 - 7:00PM at the Hub and Carpenter A at the School of Nursing (SON).

The event theme is "Food for the Body and Soul" and will feature Neatrice Holmes (keynote speaker), live performances, food demonstration, catered food samples, and local vendor expo.

You may register here as an attendee and/or business vendor. You may refer to the attached flyer for general and vendor information. This celebration is hybrid. The event will be livestreamed at the following link: https://jhuson.mediasite.com/Mediasite/Play/997fa105e7e745b88205891a0ba330211d.

We recommend people using the JHMI shuttle to get to the SON: https://jhfre.jhu.edu/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Copy-of-HW-PB-JHMI.pdf. From there it is about a six-minute walk to the School of Nursing. You would turn right on Monument and then right on Wolfe St. Pass McElderry St and then the School of Nursing will be on your left. You can also use Google Maps and input JHU School of Nursing or 525 N. Wolfe St., Baltimore, MD 21205.

If you plan on commuting via vehicle, please consider carpooling and plan 30-45 minutes for parking. You can park at the following nearby structures:

1. Washington Street Garage: 701 North Washington Street at Monument Street (0.2 miles)

2. Washington Street Parking Lot: 299 North Washington Street; Corner of Washington Street and Fayette Street (0.2 miles)

3. Ashland Garage: 900 N. Washington Street. On the southeast corner of Ashland Avenue and N. Washington Street (0.3 miles)

4. Orleans Street Garage: Orleans Street, between North Broadway and North Wolfe Street (0.2 miles)

Additionally, students can apply for one of two scholarships to be awarded during the Black Heritage Celebration. Scholarship recipients will be announced at our program.

Lady Brion is an international spoken word artist, activist, organizer and educator. Lady Brion currently serves as the executive director of the Black Arts District. In 2024 she was appointed by Governor Wes Moore as the Poet Laureate of Maryland, making her the youngest Poet Laureate in Maryland’s history and the only spoken word artist to ever hold this position. She received her B.A. in Communication and Culture from Howard University and her MFA in Creative Writing & Publishing Design from the University of Baltimore. During her slam career she has won the 2016 and 2021 National Poetry Slam, the 2017 and 2019 Southern Fried Regional Slam, and the 2019 Rustbelt Regional Slam. In 2021 she became the Women of the World Poetry Slam Champion making her the number 1 ranked woman slam poet in the world.
