Let’s Talk Conflict is a seminar series that aims to deliver a comprehensive exploration of current conflicts and humanitarian crises, focusing on a different crisis at each event. Our speakers are experts in the field who will discuss regional and historical context, delve into the intricacies of the current crises, and scrutinize the responses to humanitarian challenges. We will also specifically focus on the approach to the Health, Development, and Peace (HDP) nexus in the context of each crisis, with critical insights into how these elements take shape in theory and in reality.

The inaugural Let’s Talk Conflict seminar focused on Sudan, featuring Dr. Salim Mohamednour (WHO, Sudan office), Dr. Ali Ardalan (WHO EMRO, Health Systems in Emergencies Lab). At our second session, Dr. Aman Alawad (INTERSOS) and Professor Dr. Huda BaSaleem (University of Aden) discussed the humanitarian crisis in Yemen and the health impacts of forced displacement. Dr. Si Thura (Community Partners International) and Hnin Thet Hmu Khin (Frontline Ethics) shared their experiences working to meet community needs in Myanmar in the wake of ongoing crisis, during our third session. In our fourth session Enguday Meskele, Director of Refugees, Internally Displaced Persons and Migrants’ Rights at the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission, and Dr. Fasika Amdeslasie, a GI and laparoscopic surgeon and Dean of the Medical School at Mekelle University will describe the devastation of mass displacement and conflict on health systems and the realities of treating patients during war. Other upcoming sessions will focus on the conflicts, humanitarian impact, and response in Burkina Faso (May) and Afghanistan (May).

This seminar series is hosted by the Migration and Health Society in partnership with the Johns Hopkins Center for Humanitarian Health and several other Bloomberg School of Public Health student organizations, including the African Public Health Network (APHN), ASEAN Student Nexus (ASN), Asia Pacific Public Health Network (APPHN), and the Latino Public Health Network (LPHN). The events have been sponsored by the BSPH Student Assembly.
