    Frequently Asked Questions:

What exactly is a 'pep band'?

We're a student-run ensemble with one goal: to bring "merriment and mayhem" wherever we go! We're the soundtrack of Hopkins athletics year-round, a staple at campus traditions, and musical ambassadors for the University. The Pep Band performs at over 50 events yearly, join us for the next one!!

Are there auditions? How much experience do I need?

Don't stress— we don't hold auditions for the Pep Band! Most of our players come to us having played in marching or concert band previously. If you're concerned about your musical ability, we encourage you to reach out. We'll do our best to help you get up to speed.

    What are the time commitments?

We operate a flexible schedule, so you can pick the level of commitment right for you! All members have the opportunity to perform at 1-2 athletic events every week and 1-2 campus or community events each month. There is no minimum attendance, but most members perform 2-3 times each month. Rehearsals are once a week and strongly encouraged

What kind of music do you play?

In addition to the University's historic fight songs and alma mater, our library includes many pop songs you'd recognize: Mr. Brightside, Seven Nation Army, Sweet Caroline, September, Hey Baby, and so many more. We maintain a repertoire of over forty active tunes. You can find a list of some of them here.

Who can join the Pep Band?

All Hopkins affiliates are welcome in the Band! This includes undergraduates, grad students, alumni, faculty and staff of any JHU school. Non-affiliates may join with permission. The Pep Band Executive Board consists of Homewood undergraduate students and advised by the Office of Arts and Innovation.

    What instruments can I play?

The Pep Band is open to all instruments, including woodwinds, brass, and percussion. If you play something that would not be found in a typical marching band, we'd love to talk about how we can best accommodate you musically.

Are there instruments available to use?

Yes! We have a number of instruments available for members at no cost. We have most instruments available, including percussion, woodwinds, and brass. Just note your needs on the interest form!

    How much does it cost?

Absolutely nothing. We will never ask you to pay for anything. All instruments loans, uniforms, travel, food, etc. will be provided at no charge. We recognize that money represents a significant barrier in many music groups; we strive to be accessible as possible.
