    Frequently Asked Questions

Are there auditions? How much experience do I need?

Don't stress— we do not hold auditions for the Pep Band! Most of our players come to us having played in marching or concert band previously. If you're concerned about your musical ability, we encourage you to reach out. We'll do our best to help you get up to speed.

What kind of music do you play?

We play two kinds of music: school songs and pop tunes. In addition to Hopkins' historic fight songs and alma mater, our library includes many pop songs you'd recognize: Seven Nation Army, September, Narco, Hey Baby. We maintain a repertoire of over forty active tunes. You can find a list of some of them here.

    What are the time commitments?

We usually rehearse as a full band once a week for a little under two hours. We play one game most Saturdays and with a few Wednesday and Friday games. Other campus gigs come along about once a month. There is no minimum attendance requirement, you can play as much or as little as your schedule accommodates!

    What instruments can I play?

The Pep Band is open to all instruments, including woodwinds, brass, and percussion. If you play something that would not be found in a typical marching band, we'd love to talk about how we can best accommodate you musically.

Are there instruments available to use?

Yes! We have a number of instruments available for members at no cost. We have most instruments available, including percussion, woodwinds, and brass. Just note your needs on the interest form!

    How much does it cost?

Absolutely nothing. We will never ask you to pay for anything. All instruments loans, uniforms, travel, food, etc. will be provided at no charge. We recognize that money represents a significant barrier in many music groups; we strive to be accessible as possible.
