Center for Neighborhood Innovation (CNI):
Baltimore-based real estate companies Cross Street Partners and City Life Historic Properties partnered with Strong City Baltimore to undertake the 85,000 square foot historic preservation of the Hoen Lithograph building. This architectural treasure, which sat vacant for 35 years, has been repurposed as a vibrant mixed-use complex that provides job opportunities, job training, and neighborhood amenities called the Center for Neighborhood Innovation.
Now complete, CNI, a new model for neighborhood transformation, is an interdisciplinary group of social entrepreneurs, non-profits, service providers, researchers, and community members committed to solving the issues facing our most distressed under-resourced neighborhoods and provide with the space and support they need to affect positive community change. Unlike traditional project-based initiatives that focus on a single issue, place-based efforts such as CNI address the multiple issues presented by a single geographic area. The interdisciplinary group helps students and residents move step-by-step along the continuum from schooling to job training to career building http://hoen.co/
The Pava Marie LaPere Center for Entrepreneurship at JHU:
The Pava Center serves as the student entrepreneurship hub at JHU, supporting ventures from across the university from undergrads to post-docs. They offer co-working space, accelerator programming, non-dilutive funding, robust mentorship opportunities, and other resources, in collaboration with partners from across campus. They also employ students as Strategic Advisor interns for our programming, collaborate with student organizations (like Carey’s Entrepreneurs Forum), and help connect students to dynamic alumni networks.
Grounded in Baltimore, with an eye toward the world, we empower creators and change-makers, entrepreneurs and innovators, doers and go-getters. We help serve as a catalyst to develop good ideas into investable businesses; our student startups launch innovative products and services in an array of sectors. Over the last five years, student ventures we’ve interacted with have raised over $90 million in outside funding; last year we worked with over 230 student startups, gave away almost $450k in direct funding, and networked with countless alumni and Baltimore partners.
Carey faculty and students are encouraged to reach out to the Director of Student Ventures, Josh Ambrose (JoshAmbrose@jhu.edu). https://pavacenter.jhu.edu/
R.House:
R. House is the place to come together. It all started with ten chefs who believed that uniting to launch their restaurants was better than going it alone. It’s a food hall, but more than that, it’s a community. R.House believes in being neighbors, not guests; they see possibilities, not limitations. This is your gathering place, your kitchen table, your office, and your front stoop. At each of the ten stalls, you’ll find a team doing what they love – making a delicious poké bowl or shwarma or fried chicken sandwich. They draw inspiration from Baltimore and around the world — from Hilo to Caracas to Seoul — and bring it all back to R. House. https://r.housebaltimore.com/
