Dr. Sophia Rosenfeld, Walter H. Annenberg Professor of History at the University of Pennsylvania, will give the keynote address, entitled “Living in the Age of Choice,” at the seventh annual Richard Macksey National Undergraduate Humanities Research Symposium at Johns Hopkins University.

Rosenfeld is the Walter H. Annenberg Professor of History at the University of Pennsylvania. Drawing from her latest book, The Age of Choice: A History of Freedom in Modern Life (Princeton, 2025), her talk will explore the ways in which choice-making — in everything from shopping and dining, to marriage and faith, to politics and human rights — emerged from the 17th century onward as a proxy for freedom.

The keynote address is open to the public. All other conference events, including the keynote reception, are for registered conference guests only. For more information, please see the conference website.
