Vigil for Healthcare Workers in Gaza
Registration
Registration is now closed (this event already took place).
Details
We are a group of MSN (‘25) students who recently came together because of our shared concern regarding ongoing human rights violations in Gaza. Between October 7th and late May, an estimated 500 healthcare workers have lost their lives, and only one hospital remains partially functional in the entirety of the Gaza Strip. This is in direct violation of the fourth Geneva convention, which states that healthcare infrastructure is protected under humanitarian law, regardless of circumstance. In light of this situation, we believe it is our responsibility as aspiring healthcare workers to stand in solidarity with our international colleagues. We invite you to join us in this effort.
This vigil will involve a ceremonial lighting of candles and a moment of silence to honor the dead. All attendees must be SON students and have a Hopkins ID. Security will be present. We will also use this opportunity to fundraise for humanitarian aid: although all in attendance will receive a candle, we encourage everyone to show their support by donating to the World Central Kitchen, which provides food to areas in need, or Project Insaan, which provides medical aid. If you are interested in attending, please RSVP by Thursday, June 20th at 3pm.
We encourage all in attendance to wear masks. Also, in order to promote sustainability, we will be recollecting LED candles following the moment of silence, and we suggest that you bring a reusable bottle with you to this event–there are water stations throughout the building.
In addition, we understand that this is an emotionally fraught topic: both because it is heartbreaking to see fellow humans in this situation and because of the political tension surrounding the issue. We will have mental health support resources and information regarding the history and culture of the region on hand. Respectful dialogue is welcome, but please keep in mind that this vigil is intended to be a supportive and commemorative space.
This event is being co-hosted by the following student organizations:
