About Us

The Association of Women Surgeons (AWS) is a nationwide organization dedicated to advancing equity and inclusion for all individuals in surgery, with a focus on supporting women and gender-diverse surgeons throughout their careers. As the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine chapter, our mission is to empower current and future surgeons from historically underrepresented genders by helping them achieve their professional and personal goals. We foster excellence through mentorship, education, and a vibrant community that celebrates leadership, collaboration, and innovation in surgery. At Johns Hopkins, we focus on inspiring medical students to explore surgical careers and providing early networking and mentorship opportunities—especially for those with limited exposure to the field. Our goal is to address the structural and cultural barriers that have historically limited women’s advancement in surgery and to promote an environment where all trainees can thrive. We invite all individuals interested in furthering this charge to participate.
