In order to ensure a diverse physician workforce, first generation and/or low-income student representation is crucial. However, first generation and low/limited-income students face unique challenges in navigating college due to the lack of resources available to them, including mentorship. Mentorship is a vital resource that allows students to learn from the experiences of others and advance their professional development. FLIP-MD seeks to support college students interested in medicine by creating connections between undergraduate students and medical students, faculty, and medical residents at Johns Hopkins. Our goal is to provide mentorship and guidance to ease the premedical journey and demystify the medical school application process. We plan to facilitate networking events, provide general pre-med advice, and create an accessible resource database for students. Relaunched in 2025 after a 13-year hiatus, the Hopkins Medical Orchestra (HMO) is a student-led, non-audition, inclusive community symphonic orchestra producing four free concerts per year, with an artistic direction exploring the intersection of music, medicine, and science. HMO has a growing membership of over 80 musicians encompassing medical practitioners, faculty, staff, students, and community members across the Johns Hopkins East Baltimore campus, along with strong engagement from the wider Hopkins and Baltimore community, with over 500 audience members attending HMO concerts in 2025.

The Medicine for the Greater Good-School of Medicine (MGG-SOM) Partnership is an extension of the existing Medicine for the Greater Good curriculum with a special focus on medical students. MGG was initially founded to educate healthcare providers and residents at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center about social determinants of health (SDoH) and to strengthen their skills in community outreach. MGG's fundamental mission is to promote health and wellness beyond the confines of the hospital through an interactive and engaging partnership with the community, as well as to impact the professional identities of future doctors and nurses.

According to the National Academy of Medicine, medical care accounts for only 10-20% of the modifiable contributors to healthy outcomes for a population. The other 80-90% of contributors are what we refer to as social determinants of health. As our first course in medical school, we briefly learn about the profound health and healthcare disparities that persist in the East Baltimore community and other marginalized communities nationwide. The MGG-SOM Partnership hopes to build on this foundation to empower medical students to engage with the East Baltimore community with respect, cultural humility, and in a reciprocal manner.

Interactive "chalk talks" led by an MGG physician-leader will be held approximately every 6-8 weeks to educate students on SDoH. Topic choices are student-driven and can range from environmental health to social justice. Underlying each of these topics is education on how to effectively engage communities and disseminate medical messaging using community-specific values and language.

Vision: A multi-disciplinary volunteer organization that provides patients with relief, companionship, and joy while enabling physicians-in-training to improve competency and comfort in interacting with patients in distress.

Values: As student doctors, we do not aim to cure, treat, or manage these patients. Patients should whole-heartedly choose to participate in this initiative, with thorough knowledge of the benefits and risks.
