Mission Statement

The Black Graduate Student Association (BGSA) is a professional and social network for graduate students of African descent at Johns Hopkins University’s Krieger School of Arts & Sciences and Whiting School of Engineering. The BGSA is an interdisciplinary, multi-ethnic Black organization that supports the academic, professional, social, and emotional well-being and civic engagement of Black graduate students on the Homewood Campus.

To advance this goal, our programming consists of:
Social gatherings to facilitate networking and fellowship
Academic events to support the work of our members in their disciplines
Professional development events to help members prepare for future careers
Community events to help us connect with and serve the Greater Baltimore community

Mission
The Graduate Student Liaison Committee (GSLC) is a group of volunteer graduate students (Masters and PhD) that are responsible for planning graduate student events for the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department at Johns Hopkins University. The goals of the GSLC are to: (1) coordinate the needs of graduate students with faculty and staff when needed, (2) foster a sense of community amongst the graduate students within the ChemBE department by planning and executing social events that promote inclusion and fun on and off campus amongst graduate students and faculty/staff, and (3) represent ChemBE to serve and enhance the Johns Hopkins and surrounding Baltimore community through community service and professional development. We aim to have each lab in the department represented in the GSLC. We also aim to facilitate a collaborative and supportive graduate student body to improve the graduate student experience here at Johns Hopkins.

ChemDNA is an organization promoting a well-functioning, respectful, and inclusive learning and working environment. ChemDNA seeks to provide a space where students, faculty, and staff are represented and supported to succeed regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, orientation, and/or other identities. Key programs to create positive change include social events aimed towards initiating and informing conversation, mentorship both vertically and horizontally among career levels, and outreach to the greater community broadening diversity in STEM whilst providing exposure to the Department. Mission
Civil and Systems Engineering Graduate Association (CSEGA) (formerly known as CEGA) is a school-funded graduate student organization. The goal of CSEGA is to enhance graduate life at JHU Civil Engineering and provide student representation in the department's functions and activities. CSEGA organizes social and academic events to provide diverse experiences for the JHU Civil Engineering graduate students. 

CSEGA Event/Item DescriptionsThe following provides a brief description of the proposed CSEGA functions that were determined by the CSEGA Board at our preliminary meetings. Coffee Hour: This event will be held biweekly every month at 9 AM on a Friday. Coffee grounds and snacks are included in the budget. The goal of coffee hour is to provide a social outlet for graduate students and incentivize people to come to campus on a Friday morning.Happy Hour: This monthly event will be held each month at a specific time that accommodates the majority of graduate students and post-graduates. The objective of Happy Hour is to provide a social gathering. Drinks and snacks are included in the cost estimate.Ice-Breaker: This beginning of the academic year event is intended to ease new incoming graduate students into the department. This event will ideally be a friendly atmosphere in which new graduate students can talk with senior students and faculty about their experiences at Hopkins. This introductory will include various activities such as Frisbee. Drinks and snacks will be provided at this event and are included in the budget.Field/Hiking/City Trip: Two unique recreational events will be held (one in each semester) for graduate students. The nature of these events are undecided but they would either be a field trip to Hershey Park, hiking, or a group city trip. Workshops for research skill improvement: These workshops will focus on skill and knowledge transfer from senior to junior graduate students. The workshops can include MATLAB, LateX, FORTRAN, DQE and GBO preparation, applied math concepts etc. Thesis Defense: The expenses for snacks and drinks are included in the budget.T-Shirts: We will create T-Shirts for the entire graduate department. A T-Shirt design contest may be employed for the design.

JHU OSTIA functions as a platform to connect different schools and disciplines across Hopkins
community including School of Whiting Engineering (SWE), Krieger School of Arts and Sciences
(KSAS), School of Medicine(JHMI), School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) and
beyond. Forming teams and collaborations, we hope to address the complex international
issues in science and technology (policy regulation, diplomacy and international securities in
emerging technologies such as biotech, artificial intelligence, data security, aerospace and
blockchain technology). Additionally, we also attempt to bridge our Hopkins intellectual
community with industry leaders and policy makers, who will function as mentors and to guide
our university teams to make a difference.

We seek to bridge the gap between the financial math theory taught in our classrooms and hands-on work by appealing to a niche not yet filled at Hopkins: quantitatively focused financial investment. No other groups on campus utilize any statistical analysis or algorithmic trading strategies, but these techniques are quickly becoming the industry standard for large hedge funds and other financial institutions.

Membership Benefits
Members are educated on the practical applications of financial math and part of a community in which students can develop relationships with potential employers. We invite experts in Quant Finance to speak about the current trends in the industry. We also meet once a week to discuss topics ranging from brokerages to high-frequency trading. We focus on teaching the structure of the markets and how to interact with them rather than the theory that they are built on. We want people to be know enough to open up a brokerage account and start trading intelligently and to at least gain an appreciation for the vast world of finance that goes beyond investment banks and stocks.

Women of Whiting is a graduate student organization that supports women in STEM through professional development, social, and outreach events. Our members are primarily from the Whiting School of Engineering, Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, and the School of Medicine.

The organization is designed to serve master’s students, predoctoral students, and postdoctoral fellows. Our aim is to build an inclusive and supportive community for women in STEM and to help students prepare for facing the challenges of graduate school and professional life. Everyone is welcome to attend our events!
