Pursuits in Healthcare (PIH) Job Description

Program Summary

The Pursuits in Healthcare program provides JUMP undergraduate students opportunities to proactively support hospital teams, deliver approved and appropriate patient education when requested, shadow teams, and help service areas run smoothly.

Service Areas: OB/GYN (JHH), Internal Medicine (JHH), Internal Medicine (Bayview), Pediatrics (JHH), Emergency Medicine (JHH), Kennedy Krieger Spinal Cord Injury Institute (KKSCI).

Where You’ll Serve (Shifts & Setting)

Shift blocks: 2–4 hours depending on service area, Monday – Friday.

Shift Requirement: one shift per weekday; one student per shift in each department.

Your commitment: one fixed weekly shift (same day/time each week) from late January - early May.

Setting: varies by unit: bedside/rounds, clinic spaces, discharge areas.

What You’ll Do

Shadow & learn: Join appropriate rounds/huddles (esp. weeks 1–2) to understand workflows.

Approved education: Provide unit-approved, plain-language education using teach-back (e.g., postpartum contraception in OB/GYN; DASH diet at Bayview Internal Medicine; hypertension/diabetes basics; discharge medication overviews, where appropriate)—according to service area requirements.

Support patients, where appropriate: You might find yourself supporting services areas by doing patient comfort rounds (e.g. bring patient blankets, drinks, etc.) or conducting patient experience surveys.

Be proactive & useful: Introduce yourself each shift, seek tasks, and offer concrete help so teams can rely on you (e.g., MyChart enrollment/support; confirming information in Epic as allowed; wayfinding/navigation assists).

Other duties as needed: Each service area is different and this program is brand new, which means that our medical partners are making space for you. Generally these types of programs prioritize medical students and residents, so be patient with us and your service area as they find ways to utilize you. There might be some downtime occasionally, but it’s not the intent of the program.

• Unit training: A service-area–specific orientation

• Central MyChart + EPIC training: One session for all students
